English

English is spoken by approximately 1.27 billion people in the world, making it the most widely spoken language. There are native speakers of distinct varieties of English such as British English, American English, Canadian English, Australian English, New Zealand, Indian English, Singapore English and many others. English is on the rise as a world language and there are about three times as many non-native speakers of English as native speakers. English is used in business communication, as medium of instruction at universities and as the scientific lingua franca in scientific publishing.

English for Academic Purposes

Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program currently caters for students from all faculties who would like to improve their academic writing skills. We offer two courses at different language levels, which also take into account differing levels of experience in academic writing. Each course takes place primarily in digital format, via webex and Moodle.

Introduction to Academic Writing (B2/C1 level) covers the basics of the genre for students with little or no experience of writing academically. We work primarily on sentence, paragraph, and essay level. In contrast, Academic Writing - BA dissertation, MA thesis and academic paper writing (C1 Level) is more suitable for students who already have experience of the genre and are preparing to write their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis /dissertation. Ideally, this course should be taken alongside the thesis writing module on the student’s main course of study. Students can take one or both courses, and the courses can be taken within the same semester or in subsequent semesters, though we would recommend the latter as the workload for writing courses is very intensive.

Both courses are offered every semester and comprise 2 SWS and 3 ECTS. Students need to have completed the B1 level to register for Introduction to Academic Writing. For admission to Academic Writing - BA dissertation, MA thesis and academic paper writing (C1 Level), students need to have already entered the C1 level, i.e. they have completed a C1 course or achieved at least a low C1 on the placement test.
