EnglishEnglish is spoken by approximately 1.27 billion people in the world, making it the most widely spoken language. There are native speakers of distinct varieties of English such as British English, American English, Canadian English, Australian English, New Zealand, Indian English, Singapore English and many others. English is on the rise as a world language and there are about three times as many non-native speakers of English as native speakers. English is used in business communication, as medium of instruction at universities and as the scientific lingua franca in scientific publishing. |
New program in winter semester 2024/25
NEW: Due to popular demand, we are now extending the coaching sessions in the winter semester 2024/25!
The Language Center at the University of Siegen is thrilled to announce the third English course for the Teaching Staff at the University of Siegen!
As in the previous semesters, we will be offering individual coaching sessions with Mr Ed Shillington.
We will offer 15 coaching sessions via Webex. The sessions will take place at 12pm on Monday and will last for 60 mins. The course will start on October 21st, 2024.
During the session you will have an opportunity to ask questions about the English content in your teaching and testing materials, instructions for studets during teaching sessions, conference presentations or posters, practise delivering your lectures and presentations, etc.
Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm on Monday
Course format: digital via Webex
Please note that each participant is currently limited to booking two sessions. However, please feel free to contact us if you require an additional coaching session. We would also appreciate it if you could email us at least 24 hours before your scheduled session if you will not be able to participate. By doing so, we will be able to offer the session to other participants and reschedule your session.
Whilst the coaching sessions are scheduled at 12pm on Monday, it will be possible to reschedule some of the sessions at the participant’s request.

English for staff: Refresher course (B1/B2) - For researchers, teaching and academic staff - Part A
The course will focus on revising important aspects of grammar and vocabulary at B1 and B2 level. Whilst the primary focus of the course will be on improving oral production, studens will also further develop and improve their written production, reception, interaction and mediation skills. This will be done using a range of current topics.
The course will be a regular 14-week course in a hybrid format. Regular participation and completion of assessments will be required in order to complete the course.
