OnSET

The onSET is a worldwide used language test in the C-test format and provides quick and accurate assessment of overall language proficiency in German or English. Universities and language institutes use the test to place language learners, students and scholarship candidates in language courses or to monitor their learning progress.

OnSET for German

The onSET is a language placement test in C-test format. It makes it possible to determine global language competence in German. Before attending a German course at the Language Center, all new participants with previous knowledge of German must take the onSET language placement test first. They are then assigned to a course at the appropriate level according to their results.

Please note: An OnSet test can only be repeated if it can be proven that a language course/language stay to improve language skills has taken place.

OnSET for English

The onSET is a language placement test in C-test format. It enables you to determine your global language competence in English. Before attending an English course at the Language Center, all new participants with previous knowledge of English must take the onSET language placement test first. They will then be allocated to a course at the appropriate level according to their results.

Please register for an English course ("desired course", your personal assessment) via unisono during the enrollment phases and you will receive further information about the placement test (procedure, date, etc.) by e-mail. If you have a valid proof/certificate of your skills, a placement test is not necessary (e.g. TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge, UNIcert).

OnSET dates for stays abroad

The onSET tests are offered for English as part of the application process for study abroad and internships ( Promos scholarships) angeboten.

For Promos scholarships and overseas stays, there are dates set under agreement with the ISA department during the application phases.

Dates for this winter semester 24/25 (Stays abroad):

• Thursday, November 21st, 12:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, November 27th, 1:00 p.m.

For all other study abroad and study purposes, the Language Center offers a fixed date once a month for the OnSet language test:

Dates for this winter semester 24/25:

• Tuesday, November 19th 2024
• Tuesday, December 10th 2024
• Tuesday, January 14th 2025

starting at 10 am (10-11 am onSET, 11:15 am-12 pm essay, at 12:15 am interview) face-to-face at the Language Center.
